On: New Year, New Job

“What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude toward it. Every opportunity has a difficulty, and every difficulty has an opportunity.”

I have a "dream job"... unfortunately it's not my dream.

I'm a marketing and sales rep for a beer distributor. It's been an adjustment as I've always had the luxury of having the job/sport/classes that I love and understand. Now, I'm a little lost. I am not a beer drinker, and it would be one thing to learn the domestic side, but I am a craft and import "specialist" ha! (I'm hoping to just remember the different styles!).

Mentality is 90% of it I think. I do love the social media side of the position though as they are allowing me to manage all of the company's online accounts. If I can just keep telling myself I love my job, and focusing on the aspects that I really do love it will become a great opportunity rather than an obstacle I'm looking to replace - I'm working on that.

At times I see myself getting down about where I am career-wise, but as Ryan is very good at reiterating to me: this is my first job, most people don't love every aspect of their first job - some don't even love every aspect of their second or third. I'm pretty lucky to be where I am, living out someone else's dream job. Over the course of the year my goal is to make it my dream job.

Our company motto this year is to be BOLD.

Believe it
Own it
Live it
Deliver it

I'm going to believe in myself to make the job my dream job, own it, and dominate my sales goals, live it now rather than looking towards future positions and deliver results. If I can give myself goals to strive for I'll be happy. I'm a competitive person, and if I can turn this job into a goal for myself I'm positive it will be a great opportunity and experience for me. Bring it on 2013.
