Now, we head into Switzerland - home of the Swiss Alps and delectable chocolates!
Lucerne, Switzerland was a picturesque city. Everything from the snow-capped mountains, glistening Lake Lucerne, and twinkling lights lining the Chapel Bridge - it seemed surreal.
We arrived into the city around 4 p.m. and decided to take a quick detour to see the "Löwendenkmal" better known as the Lion Monument. The Lion Monument commemorates the hundreds of Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. Luckily, another advantage to booking our travel during the off-season period meant that once we arrived at the monument we had it entirely to ourselves - it was great to be able to take our pictures and read the monument plaques without having to fight through a crowd. It is set in a secluded courtyard just off of the main shopping area. I would imagine during peak season this little courtyard fills up in a hurry! I would recommend visiting, but the site only needs about 15 minutes of your time in Lucerne.
We also stopped off at the Jesuitenkirche, not the famous Church of St. Leodegar - which is one of the Lucerne staples, but a Baroque chapel with a gorgeous interior and rose and white plastered design. There wasn't any tourists inside and it was well worth a quick walk across the Chapel Bridge to see.
Next up, we checked into our quaint hotel and headed off into the city for sunset!
Ryan and I sampled a variety of chocolate stores, perused the small boutiques and enjoyed even more chocolate from the comfort of a park bench overlooking Lake Lucerne. Lucerne was good for my soul. We talked about the past, present and our future goals as husband and wife. It couldn't have been a more perfect setting for a portion of our honeymoon.
The next morning our alarms went off a bit too early and we headed up the mountain to Kriens, Switzerland. From there, we boarded a cable car up to Mount Pilatus - the northernmost point of the Swiss Alps. There isn't much that can compete with viewing the sunrise over Lake Lucerne from the top of the Alps. If you're not afraid of heights I would recommend this in a heartbeat. We climbed to the peak of Pilatus via a wooden staircase and the view was breathtaking. It's something that photographs can't quite capture. These are the moments and memories that stick out the most. Seeing the Venus de Milo was spectacular and an item I can check off my bucket list, but enjoying the sunrise from the Swiss Alps hand in hand with Ryan is an experience I'll remember for a lifetime.
